English Football Premier League 1982 1983 Season Review

English Football Premier League is the most prestigious domestic league in all of Europe. It is a competition which has been running for more than thirty years now and is considered as one of, if not the most difficult to follow in terms of the standard of players and teams participating in it. So if you are an avid follower of the English Football premier league, here are some of the players and teams that won the most prestigious cup during the inception of the tournament.

News of this Season

The biggest surprise in this season was actually the comeback of two long-standing European powerhouses, AC Milan and Inter Milan. Both of these teams barely missed out on qualification, which is more of a statistical thing than anything. Nonetheless, they both have a rich history and many famed players that have been associated with each of them. AC Milan enjoyed a dream season in the competition, winning twelve out of the next fifteen matches. Inter Milan managed to squeak out the last match, although it was a very hard-fought game against eventual winners Benfica.

One of the most competitive tournaments during the season was the European Super Cup, which featured the most famous sides from Europe. Manchester United and Internazionale were expecting to be at the front of the competition but instead ended up finishing fourth and fifth. AC Milan and Fiorentina also qualified, while Benfica slipped in fifth. One surprise that I did not expect was the Swiss team FC Basel, who finished third after a dramatic penalty shoot-out that went their way.

This was the first season that English Football Premier League featured two teams from the UK. West Ham and Watford had finished second and third in the previous cups, while Liverpool and Manchester United took part in the league’s main event. I believe this was a great step in English football development as many teams are now looking to win the cup as opposed to simply competing for third place. Maybe next time the English Football Premier League has its league cup, the seeded draw will feature two English Premier League sides, rather than just one.

Watford – Сurrent Season Champions

The season started well with Watford thrashing Wolves by a score of 14 goals to nil. Wolves, however, fought back with five unanswered goals, giving themselves a chance of moving up to third. Watford held firm to win their first home league match against Wolves, while Cardiff and Manchester United faced another thrilling cup affair. It was Cardiff who came out on top with a 2-1 win, whilst Watford lost their second consecutive league game. The season continued to go excitingly along, with many observers predicting that there would be plenty more upsets in the coming weeks.

A week later, in what became known as the English Football premier league finale, Manchester United and Liverpool squared off in what would become an all-season classic. Liverpool looked to have taken the title with two games to spare, but in the last few minutes of regulation time, David James scored what looked like the winning goal. Although the score was not close, the atmosphere inside the stadium was tense and somewhat heated. Unfortunately, the rest of the season was forgettable, and in the eleventh round of the playoffs, nothing could prevent Watford from taking the title.

Watford has since then won three English football premier league titles, making them the current season champions. The Citizens in the following year enjoyed another premiership-winning season, and they maintained their title with two more crowns to their name. In the decades that have passed, Watford has only missed out on the finals once, although they did go into extra sessions in an attempt to win the treble. In the current modern era, Watford Football Club is amongst the top teams in the country and has not missed out on any finals in the past fifteen years. They currently lie two points behind third-placed Manchester United and look extremely capable of winning the treble in the next season’s edition of the English Premier League.

Watford is only a few points away from the leaders in the standings, Manchester United. If they win the treble this season, they will become the first team in the history of the English Football Premier League to do so. However, Manchester United has already claimed the trophy twice, so Watford has a good chance of claiming it also. Both teams play exciting, energetic football, which makes for great entertainment at both home and on the road. Both teams have quality players, with some very young and exciting talents available through the youth set up at Watford as well.

Facts about Other Teams

Manchester City was relegated despite a four-year spending spree totalling around £5million. Swansea City was also relegated after only their second season as a First Division club. They had finished sixth a year earlier and, at several stages, had topped the league table. Brighton & Hove Albion joined them on the way down.

Queens Park Rangers, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City won promotion to the First Division. Rotherham United, Burnley and Bolton Wanderers were relegated to the Third Division. It was another blow for Bolton, who had been relegated from the First Division three years earlier.

Charlton Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers both came within hours of going bankrupt but were both saved by respective new owners.

Portsmouth’s revival continued as they ran away with the Third Division championship, followed closely behind by runners-up Cardiff City and third-placed Huddersfield Town. Newport County finished 4th, their highest post-war position in the Football League. Occupying the four relegation places were Reading, Wrexham, Doncaster Rovers and Chesterfield.
